San Francisco Giants’ decision to fire manager Gabe Kapler before the season’s end. Explore the reasons behind this managerial change and its implications for the team’s future.
The San Francisco Giants have made the decision to part ways with manager Gabe Kapler with just three games remaining in the regular season. Kapler’s tenure with the team saw them achieve a record of 78-81 this season, leading to an early playoff exit. Despite being 20 games behind in the NL West division race as of today, they are still within 4.5 games of securing the final Wild Card slot.
This marks the second consecutive season where Kapler’s managerial record resulted in 81 losses, following an 81-win season the year before. After four seasons in charge, during which the team achieved a 295-248 record, including an NLDS appearance and Kapler earning the NL Manager of the Year in 2021, the Giants have decided to make a change.
Farhan Zaidi, the President of Baseball Operations for the San Francisco Giants, issued a statement regarding this decision, saying, “After making this recommendation to ownership and receiving their approval, I met with Gabe today to inform him of our decision. In his tenure as Giants manager, Gabe led our team through an unprecedented pandemic in 2020 and a franchise-record 107 wins and postseason berth in 2021. He has been dedicated and passionate in his efforts to improve the on-field performance of the San Francisco Giants, and I have tremendous respect for him as a colleague and friend.”
Kapler had joined the Giants in 2020 after being let go by the Philadelphia Phillies following a two-year stint as their manager. His record across six seasons as a manager in MLB now stands at 456-411.
“I don’t have one negative thing to say about Gabe Kapler,” Zaidi said during his news conference. “We reached some really high highs during his tenure here … we’re looking for new and different leadership in our clubhouse, a different dynamic there.”
